The Fellows

The program was created for MBA and graduate engineering and SIMS students with an interest in technology, business, and the rapid development of China's high tech economy. Applicants must be a full time Haas MBA student or a MS or PhD student in SIMS or the College of Engineering, and enrolling in classes in the Fall.

An information session is held in March for those interested in applying for the following year.

Brian Beard

MBA Candidate, Haas School of Business

Brian is originally from Texas and holds an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Wanting to branch out after college, he moved to Silicon Valley where he worked as a product support engineer for a small semiconductor startup. After spending three years traveling the world for work, he permanently moved to Asia where he lived for 4 years just before coming to Haas. The majority of his time in Asia was spent living in Taipei where he studied Mandarin full time and also worked for two local Taiwanese companies. At Haas, Brian is the Social VP for the PacRim club, a OneHaas undergraduate mentor, and the Business Manager for HaasWeek. He spent his recent summer on an IBD project in Zambia and an internship working at Samsung Semiconductor on a strategic marketing project. After Haas, he plans to work in international business, marketing, or strategy. He is conversationally fluent in Mandarin, has traveled to 34 countries, is a 14 year snowboard veteran, and enjoys cooking.

MBA Candidate, Haas School of Business

John graduated from UC Berkeley in 2002 with a Computer Science degree and Business Administration minor. Before returning back to Berkeley to pursue his MBA at the Haas School of Business, John worked for 2 years as a Software Engineer and Consultant at a start-up company, Parasoft Corporation, in Los Angeles. At Haas, he is an active member of the community, serving as a Co-President of the Haas Technology Club, organizer of the >play Conference, Haas Student Ambassador, and Graduate Student Instructor. This summer, he joined Microsoft as a Business Development Manager in the MSN Search group. The MOT China Fellowship will give John the opportunity to explore his interest in emerging international Internet technologies and the implications of China's increasing number of Internet users, which currently only trails the number of users in the United States.

Jike Chong

Ph.D. Candidate, College of Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Jike is fascinated by synergies created at grand scales. As an electronics engineer at Sun Microsystems Inc, he took part in designing and integrating a quarter-billion basic transistors into a high performance microprocessor. In 2004, after three years in the industry and two patent applications, Jike decided to return to academia for doctoral studies. His research utilizes simple processing elements to realize complex concurrent applications on billion-transistor parallel platforms in an automated design flow. In building synergy between people and organizations, Jike held leadership positions in numerous professional organizations, and currently facilitates team chartering and people skills seminars for engineering students. Born in Beijing, China, and grew up in Vienna, Austria, Jike earned his Bachelor and Master degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. For the MOT fellowship, Jike would like to focus on generating synergy between business, technology, and public policy to increase China’s value to the global economy.

Bindiya Jadhwani

 

Masters Candidate, School of Information

Bindiya grew up in Mumbai, India where she completed her Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science. Currently, she is pursuing her Masters in Information Management and Systems. Right from her undergraduate years she has been actively taking part in extra-curricular activities, with a special focus on the IEEE student activities of her school. She held positions of vice-chairperson and public relations office under the IEEE student branch of her college, Thadomal Shahani Engineering College. Extremely enthusiastic and vivacious, Bindiya enjoys taking up challenges and working in a team environment. She did her final-year engineering project with Ernst and Young, and also interned at Nuilabs Equipment Pvt Ltd. Her area of interest current is project management and business analysis. She is really looking forward to studying about innovative management strategies used in the very dynamic market of China.

Sabrina Ko

MBA Candidate, Haas School of Business

Born and raised in the Bay Area, Sabrina has always bled blue and gold, with an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Cal and having worked for two companies founded by Haas alumni. As a product manager at Achex, Inc. (a start-up bought by First Data), she witnessed the entrepreneurial spirit ingrained in Berkeley MBAs and cannot imagine working in any field other than high-tech. Sabrina spent six years in Business Development and Product Management, bringing new Internet payment products to market during the dot-com boom and bust. At Haas, she is focusing on Management of Technology and spent her summer internship at AOL working on the digital photos and video products.

Kate Nardinelli

MBA Candidate, Haas School of Business

Kate Nardinelli is a second year MBA student at Haas. Prior to business school, she was an investment banking analyst at Merrill Lynch in Palo Alto and London. In this role she advised numerous clients in the technology, telecom and media industries regarding corporate finance and M&A transactions. Kate spent the summer interning at Yahoo! in the marketing finance department, where she focused on user valuation. She has lived and traveled extensively outside of the US, including studying in Paris, working in Senegal, and traveling to Germany and South Africa for business. Kate earned her B.A. in Economics with Honors from Stanford University.

Tim Stucka

MBA Candidate, Haas School of Business

Tim is currently pursuing his MBA as a Clausen International Business Fellow at the Haas School of Business. A native of Chicago with a BA in Economics and Political Science from the University of Michigan, he has worked as an investment banker with Bank of America and in various finance roles in France, Germany, and Vietnam. A participant in UC Berkeley’s Management of Technology program, he spent this summer as a management consultant to technology clients as a Summer Associate with A.T. Kearney. For Tim, an ardent traveler and fascinated observer of Asia’s rapid economic and technological development, the upcoming visit to China promises to be a defining milestone.

Jing Yang

Ph.D. Candidate, College of Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Jing was born and grew up in Inner Mongolia, which is at northern part of China. She joined Ph. D. program in Depart of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at 2002. Her current research focus on designing and building nanometer real silicon implementation for newly emerged wireless communication system. She is a recipient of the UC Berkeley Graduate Fellowship and Motorola Fellowships for potential member of hi-tech in China. She is formerly invited by Intel for presenting her promising research. Before coming to Berkeley, Jing received her B. S. degree from Tsinghua University and worked at Putan-Smartcomm doing opportunity recognition for hardware embedded chipset in China. She is expecting a brand new perspective in the visit to China. In her free time, Jing enjoys herself by playing piano, tennis and practicing Yoga.

Chris Yuan

Ph.D. student, College of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering

Chris is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, with research mainly focused on Alternative Energy and Environmental Benign Manufacturing. At Berkeley, Chris is working on collaborating projects with Ford Motor Company on alternative energy supply patterns, aiming at reducing the cost and environmental impact, by optimizing the automotive manufacturing processes. Chris earned his M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech University where he is a recipient of Chancellor's Fellowship and Dean's Scholarship. Chris got his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and B.A degree in English from Petroleum University of China in 1999. After that, Chris worked as a Mechanical Engineer at China National Petroleum Corporation for three years.
