Management of Technology - Doing Business in China
MBA 290H / ENG 290
2 Units
Jihong Sanderson

This is a Related Course of the MOT program.

If you believe that China is just the “World’s Manufacturing Center”, you are badly out of date. This is the seventh year of the course. It provides practical knowledge on business in which will give you a long term career advantage.

China will be the world’s No.1 economy by 2015 - only 6 years from now - according to OECD projections (March, 2008). China’s 45-50% saving rate, huge and rapid growing talent pool, explosively expanding domestic market, and its typhoon of business activity…all make doing business in China the new opportunity for this generation.

Throughout the semester, we will examine a real business case in order to study in depth the implications of the regular topics for each section/module. This in-depth study will form the basis for the final group projects, which will be evaluated by the founder of the company we will study, and he will offer travel subsidies for the best projects. Those who are selected will be invited to visit China, meeting business leaders, government officials, and peers.

Part 1: Must-Have Topics such as: What are the fundamental differences between doing business in China and the US? How does understanding the fine line between Guanxi and corruption determine my success in China? What new Chinese business models are emerging?

Part 2: Hot Topics in 2009 such as: What are the Chinese policies to respond the global financial crisis? How do the changes in China’s industrial policy for health care, logistics, new energy and other sectors create opportunities?

Become part of the “Chinese Miracle”, learning how to do business in or with China, as China moves past manufacturing.
